9 Ways to Get Your Home Summer-Ready

It’s June and that means summer is officially here!  Time to break out the grill, clean up those flower beds, open up your swimming pool and prepare your patio and deck area for countless hours of relaxation.  Before you know it, you’ll be hosting parties, barbeques and sipping your coffee while admiring your garden.  It’s time to get to work, so grab your gardening gloves, lawn tools, hose and cleaning supplies and let’s get to it!

  1. Windows & Doors

Wipe down both sides of your windows (it’s best to wash them on a cloudy day to avoid streaks). Clean your window screens and make any repairs before reinstalling them in the windows.  Check the caulking around your windows and doors to prevent unwanted pests and warm air from entering your home.

  2. Roof & Gutters

Give your roof and gutters a once-over to ensure they are all in working order. Check the drains to make sure they are cleared of leaves or mud.  Look for any loose, missing or curled shingles on your roof and keep an eye out for leaks.

  3. Cooling System

Before the real summer heat sets in, be sure to check on your air conditioner and see if it needs to be serviced. Check the filter as well to see if it needs to be replaced before it’s working double time this summer.

  4. Safety Detectors

Test your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide monitors to see if they need new batteries or should be replaced. Summer is a good time to have your chimney cleaned.  Also, check to see if you have flashlights on hand for power outages during summer storms.

  5. Dusting & Cleaning

Say goodbye to dust bunnies under your bed, on top of your ceiling fan blades and on your windowsills. Reverse your ceiling fan direction to counterclockwise in order to create a wind-chill effect and keep things cool in your home.

  6. Pressure Wash

For a big WOW factor, pressure wash your driveway, walkway and sides of your home. Wash away months of debris and discoloration at the pull of a power washer trigger.

  7. Porch & Deck

Wash down your porch and give your deck a little TLC. Hammer down any loose nails, replace warped boards and reseal your deck to keep it safe and functional.  Clean patio and deck furniture well and let dry in the sun.

  8. Lawn & Garden

Tend to your garden by weeding, pruning and adding a fresh layer of mulch to your landscape projects. Service all of your lawn care tools and machines and be sure to properly maintain them all season long.  Consider setting up sprinklers for better flower and produce growth.

  9. Pool Maintenance & Safety

Prepare to cool off this summer in your refreshing pool by thoroughly cleaning it and following proper water testing. If you have young children, pool fences and alarm systems are the best way to protect your kids from unattended water accidents.

Follow these summer home maintenance tips and you’ll be well on your way to basking in the summer sun and relaxing in the comfort of your home.
